For our prime wine-tasting review we’ve chosen one of our all time favorites Wine of Moldova – Negru de Purcari Vintage 2009 from Chateau Purcari. It’s expensive (in fact it is the most expensive premium dry wine on the market today), it’s red, it’s dry and it’s damn good. This wine is a limited edition, made only in good vintages and only with the best selected grapes.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Visual
The wine has a noble-pure garnet color, it is dense and opaque, with the rim-color on the purple side of the spectrum.

Olfactory
The nose is clean and strong with no signs of wine faults. On the first nose there are sharp, mouth-watering notes of black fruits – black currant, sweet black cherry and black raspberry, with a noble odor of a slightly roasted french barique towards the end.

Gustatory
The wine is definitely dry, but sweet enough to make you salivate a while, with no signs of residual sugar. The sweet notes comes from moderate alcohol level, strong enough for a good wine, but not disturbing or dominating your palate, with moderate to high acidity and dry tannin. Speaking of tannin level, it is this much one desires from a fine, dry red wine. The overall balance is very good, with just a bit more nuanced tannin and acidity in contrast with other elements. To be mentioned here is that the wine is near his best right now, with a just couple of years of bottle maturation away from his peak form, when high acids will smoother the tannin level, and as a result, the word balance will turn into harmony.

Aftertaste
The wine has a long finish with a velvety, almost elegant, aftertaste, which fills your mouth and makes you desire one more sip, and then one more, until your glass is empty. This is that kind of wine, when you don’t take your fingers off the glass, because there’s little to no time between every sip you take.

This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 91.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, this wine was already awarded a silver medal by Decanter World Wine Awards – one of the top 5 world’s most appreciated wine-tasting competitions, a simple fact that says a lot about this wine. The 2009 vintage is sold out as expected, but good things come to those who wait – the 2011 vintage is already available in wine shops. Just don’t wait for too long before you get one – a limited edition is called so for a reason.
