WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

We continue to taste Wine of Moldova and we are heading into the cabernet sauvignon zone – the most in-demand grape variety of the world today. The rivalry for the top spot is overwhelming: Napa Valley versus Bordeaux, new world vs old world, fruit-forward wines vs savory wines. A high end cabernet sauvignon wine is not a hard find anymore even here in Moldova, that’s why this time, the wine we’ve chosen, was an easy pick – Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 from Mimí.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Visual
The wine has a noble-pure garnet color, it is dense and opaque, with the rim-color of a clear garnet shade.

Olfactory

The nose is clean and strong with no signs of wine faults. The first nose reveals strong notes of very ripe black fruits – black cherry, sour cherry, black plum and black mulberry, then come some delicious notes of mulberry jam and black cherry jam, and, in the end, the nose is delighted with savory notes of a medium-plus toasted barrique, black pepper, black tea and a hint of cloves.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with no signs of residual sugar and moderate, well integrated alcohol level. It has moderate acidity and dry tannin that makes it taste bittersweet – ripe and seedy, and it feels complex but quite square. The overall balance is good, with just a bit too much barrique aroma in it that raise a little over the palate.

Aftertaste

The wine has a long, bitter-sweet finish, with a velvety aftertaste that lasts quite a while, very delicate and fruity, with a very well-marked ripe-black-cherry accent.

chartsThis is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.4 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Last but not least, we are pleased to announce that this wine was already awarded a gold medal by Mundus Vini International Wine Award, a silver medal by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, two commended awards by Decanter World Wine Awards and another commended accolade by International Wine Challenge – four of the most influential wine tasting competitions in the world of wine – a tell that speaks volumes about the levels of cabernet sauvignon wines from Moldova. This is not the first time that we are amazed by a cabernet sauvignon wine made in Moldova – one can remark a very positive trend, of wine quality rise, in the last couples of years – a quite welcome sight by all means.
