WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

We continue to review Wine of Moldova and we still keep up with the white wine theme, but this time we are going to review a famous white blend. This wine is almost a legend, a wine enjoyed by royalty and aristocrats all over the world, a wine that is nothing less than a bottled poem – beauty and romance at a glance – Alb de Purcari 2012 from Chateau Purcari.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Visual
The wine has a bright yellow color, with a translucent topaz yellow rim-color, that turns to butter-white towards the rim.

Olfactory

The nose is rich with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is amazingly intense and it brings notes of sweet fruits and citrus – yellow pear, lemon, yellow apple, kiwi, yellow mirabelle, straw grass, pineapple, grapefruit, acacia flower and a hint of quince. After a while, the second nose brings elegant and nuanced notes of butter and fresh chopped oakwood – a hint that the wine was barrel maturated.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with no hints of residual sugar. It has high alcohol level, high acidity and quite dry tannin, which makes the wine taste crisp, seedy and velvety. This is a friendly and delicious wine, with a fair overall balance, which makes it taste rich, silky and fresh – it smells of fresh rain in a wheat field, on a hot summer day.

Aftertaste

The wine has a medium finish and a balanced aftertaste – it feels lean, noble and persistent at the same time.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that this wine has been awarded two bronze medals by Decanter World Wine Awards, another two bronze medals by International Wine & Spirit Competition and a bronze medal by Challenge International du Vin – some of the most demanding wine-tasting competitions in the world of wine. All those accolades, once again, underline the overall quality of this wine. In our opinion, this is a quite delicate blend – it consists of a classic, buttery chardonnay, blended with an aromatic pinot gris and finished with a noble pinot blanc. The final result is unbelievable smooth – the chardonnay profile dominates the palate, but the other two grape varieties add something extra, something that transforms the wine into a fresh and easy to drink summer infusion – it’s simply epic.
