WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue to taste Wine of Moldova and we are heading towards the merlot wine zone – the most underrated red grape variety. The wine that we are going to review today is one of the most complete wines we’ve tasted so far – a world class merlot wine with a complex profile and a strong personality – Molda Merlot 2010 from Berhord-Vin.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a clear and noble ruby color, with the rim-color showing glimpses of a copper shade.
Olfactory
The nose is strong and elegant, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose brings very clear and nuanced notes of red fruits and spice: overripe sour cherry, red mulberry, pomegranate, red currant, ripe red plum, black raspberry and red pepper. A bit later comes secondary notes of black tea, cinnamon and a medium-roasted oak wood.
Gustatory
The wine is dry, with no signs of residual sugar at all. It has high, very well integrated alcohol level, high acidity and medium tannin, which makes it taste lean, firm, rich and complex. This is an extracted, velvety and elegant wine – with lots of mature fruit, crisp acidity and smooth tannin – the wine is clearly at its peak – it has a fair overall balance, a bit zesty at first and harmonious on the finish.
Aftertaste
The wine has a medium-plus finish with a fruity and delicious aftertaste. It reminds you of Moldova’s traditional cherry pies and overripe, early summer sour cherries.
This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.4 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that this wine has been already appreciated on the international scene with two commended awards by International Wine Challenge – one of the world’s most influential wine contests. Those two accolades speaks for themselves, and we can only subscribe and add, that this is one of the best merlot wines we’ve tasted to date – velvety and fruity, complex and elegant, in one word – a delight. And because every great wine deserves a great dish – we would strongly recommend to pair it with a medium-rare filet mignon stake, dressed in a cabernet/merlot sauce.

Great article! I love your rating system. We live in Napa Valley and there are all sorts of rating wheels and other things that I’ve seen, but yours is so intuitive. And thanks for sticking up for Merlot. Check out our latest article on perhaps the best Merlot producer in Napa Valley. https://topochinesvino.com/2016/08/16/wine-that-fits-the-bill/

Thanks for the kind words. By the way we are doing our best to get our hands on a Napa merlot or cabernet in order to get a better view on the levels of wines made in USA as well 😉

Well, we have 500 wineries, almost all of which make Cabernet. Check out cranefamilyvineyards.com, it is run by a neighbor of mine.
