WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Tonight we are going to review a wine blend from the Epanomi region of GreeceRed 2011 by Ktima Gerovassiliou. The winemaker’s philosophy is to constantly research and experiment with greek and foreign varieties – the aim is to produce high-quality wines which exhibit all the distinctive characteristics of the Epanomi region’s terroir. The wine was aged in french oak barrels for 12 months and is a blend made of three grape varieties: syrah, which forms main structure, merlot, responsible for the body, and limnio, which brings on acidity and local terrior. Without further ado, on to the tasting!

Visual
Deep and rusty copper color, with noble brick orange hues towards the rim of the glass.

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with overripe red fruits flavours: sour cherry, dried red cherry, cranberry, redcurrant, red delicious apple, red plum, overripe rose hips, ripe pomegranate and cherry seeds. An instant later the nose is filled with notes of red pepper, paprika, nutmeg, sundried oakwood and some subtle notes of rooibos tea.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with strong alcohol level, high acidity and firm tannin. It feels firm, bold and tannic, with a nuanced ripe and fruity accent. This is a quite structured and complex wine, yet it tastes angular, rough and woody towards the end. The wine is quite a bit off its balance, with a touch of alcoholic warmth showing through and a quite fruity and elegant finale.

Aftertaste

It has a medium-plus finish and a balanced, a bit sharp yet bitter-seedy aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a good Wine of Greece and the overall rating says the same, with 89.9 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Conclusion: this is a fine wine that has already passed over the peak of its form – elegant yet rough and austere – a wine on the decline that comes a couple of years late for the tasting. Nevertheless, it is still a fine wine – the blend feels quite harmonious and it does display notes of local terrior. The wine’s rough tannins and the alcoholic warmth makes it an ideal pairing partner for any grilled meat dishes, like for example some lamb chops with rosemary and buttery garlic or a rib-eye steak with oregano-lemon marinade, as all the wine’s sharpness will be perfectly countered by the spicy flavours of the dish. Cheers!
