Today we are going to review a genuine Valpolicella blend from the Veneto region in Northern ItalyLa Preosa Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2020 by Boscaini Carlo. This wine is a classic Valpolicella blend, made of the three main grape varieties: 50% corvina, 40% corvinone and 10% rondinella, where corvina forms the wine’s main body and structure, corvinone is all about up-front richness, bringing red fruits to the foreground, while rondinella builds a more refined mid-palate and offers a dynamic finale. The grapes for this wine were sourced only from the slopes of La Preosa vineyard and, in order to soften the tannins and add a layer of extra complexity to the final blend, the wine has been aged between 9 and 12 months in oak barrels of different sizes, with another 3 months in the bottle before being released on the market. But enough with all that theory, that said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

intensity: rich & savory
fruit character: ripe

The opening aromas of this wine offer a burst of ripe red fruits, like redcurrant, cranberry and sour cherry, with a touch of savory delicacy that hints at some presence of brown olive, old leather and barnyard. Woven throughout this primary layer are some subtle hints of earthiness, like marl or clay. This earthy intrigue adds complexity and keeps the fruit from feeling overly ripe or cloying. In the background, a layer of dried herbs emerges, offering hints of oregano, bay leaf and thyme. This intriguing bouquet suggests a lighter-bodied red wine with a focus on red fruits, balanced by earthy and savory nuances.

finish: medium- | aftertaste: crisp & seedy

The palate mirrors the nose, offering a wave of ripe red fruit flavors that echo the aromas of sour cherries and cranberries. Earthy and savory notes emerge here as well, adding a complex layer that complements the fruit without overpowering it. The bright acidity cuts through the initial richness of the fruit, keeping the wine lively and refreshing, while the tannins feel a bit coarse and slightly seedy on the tongue, leaving a lingering grip on the finish. A touch of alcoholic warmth adds structure, leading to a crisp and slightly seedy aftertaste. The overall mouthfeel feels angular, with slightly rough tannins, thus forming a delicate and ample body.

//Verdict
maturity: in its prime | drink now or in the next 2 years
verdict: fine | highly recommended | a wine of premium quality

Overall, this wine offers a pleasant and inviting bouquet. The palate follows suit, delivering a wave of ripe red fruits interwoven with savory and earthy undertones. However, a hint of warmth disrupts the balance on the mouthfeel and the seedy tannins create a slightly disjointed aftertaste. Despite an ample body and delicate character, the wine feels a touch angular and lacks the expected complexity and finesse of a well-crafted Valpolicella blend. This might be a good choice for a casual drinker who enjoys a light-bodied red wine with some rustic charm, but for those seeking a more sophisticated tasting experience, this wine might not hit the mark.

Pairing: Due to the wine’s emphasis on red fruits, balanced by savory and earthy undertones and it’s lighter body, it would be best suited for  dishes that won’t overpower the wine’s delicate character. We believe that grilled pizza with eggplant and prosciutto would be a fantastic pairing option. The acidity in the wine would cut through the richness of the mozzarella cheese and the salty tang of the prosciutto, while the wine’s fruity character would complement the flavours of the rich tomato sauce. In the same key, the earthy notes in the wine would echo the flavors of the roasted eggplants, creating a harmonious interplay of flavors and textures. The lighter body of the wine won’t overpower the delicate flavors of the pizza, thus  matching the rustic nature of the dish. Cheers!
