Today we are going to review a quite intriguing wine from Banat wine region, situated in the south-west of Romania – Vorbe Feteasca Neagra 2021 by Agape Arta & Natura. Feteasca Neagra is an indigenous romanian grape variety that has been grown for hundreds of years on substantial plantings in the south of Moldova and eastern Muntenia, and today, it is the most famous red grape variety in Romania. Wines made from feteasca neagra grapes are usually expressive, complex and structured, wines that often are compared to merlot and cabernet franc, mostly due to their body, robust tannins and elegant textures. Feteasca Neagra is recognized for its complex structure and fruit-forward profile, producing wines that express depth and personality. There is a rising demand for feteasca neagra wines on the regional as well as on the international markets and many experts consider this variety to be the visit card of romanian wines. The wine we are reviewing today encapsulates the essence of its origin, crafted from feteasca neagra grapes that are sourced from the picturesque Banat-Silagiu sub-region and produced in a limited edition of only 1100 bottles. The Banat-Silagiu appellation has a moderate climate that is conducive to nurturing red grape varieties. In order to soften the tannins and add a layer of extra complexity, this wine has been aged for 16 months in french oak barriques.

//Terroir
The terroir of Banat region is particularly well-suited for feteasca neagra variety, as the region’s soil composition retains essential nutrients and sustains diverse flora and fauna. The interplay of the local climate and soil paves the way for wines that reflect their unique geography, offering a distinct flavour profile compared to similar varietals from other regions. Here, at the Agape winery, all the grapes are cultivated biodynamically, thus prioritizing soil health and biodiversity, eschewing herbicides in order to maintain a rich ecosystem.
