Bodegas Muga is a titan of Rioja – a name synonymous with unwavering tradition and exceptional quality since its founding in 1932. Located in the legendary Barrio de la Estación of Haro, the Muga family has built a legacy on meticulous craftsmanship. In a move that sets them apart from nearly every other winery in the world, they maintain their own in-house cooperage, employing a master cooper to craft and repair every single oak barrel and vat used for fermentation and aging. This profound connection to wood is at the heart of their philosophy, it represents a constant dialogue between the estate’s deep-rooted traditions and a forward-thinking vision.
Today we are going to review a striking wine from Rioja Alta, which is one of Spain‘s most famed wine regions – El Andén de la Estación Rioja 2021 by Bodegas Muga. Rioja (which is Spain‘s most famous wine region) is known for its fruity-dusty wines that have the ability to age well for many years. Rioja is one of very few European winemaking regions that uses american oak barrels for ageing. The region itself is moderated by the Sierra Cantabria – a small but jagged mountain range that stops clouds from coming into the Rioja valley. The wines of Rioja are based mainly on the tempranillo grape variety, which is the champion grape of the region. The wine we are reviewing today is a modern interpretation of a classic Crianza – a blend of only two grape varieties: tempranillo (70%) and grenache (30% – called garnacha in Spain), where tempranillo forms the wine’s main body and structure, while garnacha adds up-front richness, ripe red fruit flavors and a notable warmth. In order to soften the tannins and add extra complexity to the final blend, and contrary to the local traditions, this wine has been aged for 14 months in neutral French and Central European oak barriques, all crafted in Muga‘s own cooperage. This approach aims to preserve the wine’s fruit-forward character.

The Rioja Alta within La Rioja is widely regarded as the historical and stylistic heart of the appellation, where Atlantic influences shape a slightly cooler and more humid climate compared to other parts of Rioja. Vineyards are generally situated at elevations between 400m and 650m above sea level, where moderate temperatures and long growing seasons allow grapes to ripen slowly while preserving natural acidity and aromatic complexity. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone with pockets of iron-rich clay and alluvial deposits, offering good water retention while still allowing sufficient drainage for healthy vine development. These conditions are particularly favorable for Tempranillo, which thrives here and forms the backbone of the region’s wines, often supported by small proportions of Garnacha, Graciano, or Mazuelo. Wines from Rioja Alta are typically elegant, balanced, and structured, known for their bright red fruit character, refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and excellent ageing potential, making them especially suited for the region’s traditional long oak ageing.

color: deep & opaque ruby color
clarity: hazy garnet shades at the rim
In the glass, the wine presents a deep and opaque ruby color, signaling significant concentration and youth. Towards the rim of the glass, the color transitions into hazy garnet shades, adding a touch of classic elegance to its modern appearance.

intensity: rich & fruity-oaky
fruit character: ripe & overripe
The nose is rich and immediately expressive, dominated by a ripe fruit character with a distinct oaky accent. The foreground is a powerful medley of red and black fruits, showcasing red plum, blackberry, blackcurrant, and a hint of bitter cherry. This fruit core is interwoven with clear notes from its time in oak: toasted wood, sweet tobacco, vanilla, and the warm scent of sun-dried oak. In the background, a layer of complexity emerges with nuances of baking spices like red pepper, nutmeg, cloves, and a touch of anise, all resting on a subtle earthy foundation of loam and clay.

sweetness: dry | acidity: high | alcohol: high | tannin: high | balance: good
finish: medium+ | aftertaste: heady & crisp
On the palate, this wine is a remarkably heavy, heady, and muscular Rioja blend. It is unapologetically bold, with a firm and potent structure. The mouthfeel is dry and dominated by an exuberant acidity that attempts to cut through the wine’s immense weight. However, an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth creates a heavyweight sensation, a testament to its 15% ABV. The tannins are ripe and seedy, contributing to a grippy texture. The overall impression is that of an extracted and overripe profile, where immense power and rich, oak-influenced fruit nuances take center stage, creating a profile that feels closer to a fortified red than a classic Rioja blend. The experience culminates in a crisp and heady aftertaste.

maturity: developing | drink now or within the next 2 to 3 years
verdict: fine | an excellent wine | a wine of premium quality with good potential
All in all, this is a modern interpretation of a Rioja blend, a ‘flavour bomb‘ that prioritizes power, intensity, and immediate impact over subtlety and finesse. It currently lacks the harmony and overall balance one might expect from a top-tier Rioja, as the bold fruit, high alcohol, and pronounced oak feel more like separate components than an integrated whole. This is more of a New World-styled wine that will certainly appeal to enthusiasts who appreciate sheer power and aromatic nuance. At present, it is still developing and quite raw. We would strongly recommend cellaring this wine for at least another 2 to 3 years. This additional time in the bottle should allow all its elements to integrate, softening the heat and allowing more balance and perhaps even a sense of harmony to emerge.

Given its muscular and heady character, this wine demands a food pairing that can stand up to its intensity. Forget delicate dishes, instead think bold, rich, and savory. We recommend pairing it with grilled lamb chops seasoned with rosemary and garlic. The wine’s exuberant acidity and ripe tannins will cut through the richness of the lamb, while its spicy and smoky notes will resonate beautifully with the charred, herbaceous flavors of the meat, creating a congruent and deeply satisfying match. Cheers!

rating: 93.4![]()
The wine’s name, ‘El Andén de la Estación,’ translates as ‘The Station Platform’ – a direct nod to Bodegas Muga’s prestigious location in Haro’s historic Barrio de la Estación. This district is famed as the birthplace of modern Rioja, where many of the region’s most iconic wineries were established due to their proximity to the railway for exporting wine. Muga is also one of the only wineries in Spain with its own in-house master cooper and team of barrel makers, giving them unparalleled control over the oak that shapes their legendary wines.
