Today we are going to review a genuine, single varietal pinot grigio wine from the Veneto region in northern Italy – Grigio Luna Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie 2022 by Cecilia Beretta. Pinot Grigio, also called Pinot Gris, is a french grape variety famous for its refreshing citrusy aroma and zesty acidity, that today is enjoying a wave of popularity perhaps greater than it has ever known. Technically speaking, pinot grigio and pinot gris are the two names of the same grape variety, yet stylistically winemakers are using the italian name to highlight the crisp style, usually totally dry with brilliant acidity, and the french name to underline the lean style, that is often slightly off-dry, with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. The berries of the pinot gris / pinot grigio grape variety have a grayish-purple or pink-grey skin color, that’s why some of the wines could get that pinkish-peach shade after getting in contact with the grape skins during the pressing process or during maceration. The ‘Luna‘ wine is made only from pinot grigio the grapes sourced from the Cecilia Beretta‘s family estate, which has been a center for advanced agricultural studies since 1998. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

intensity: pronounced & expressive

On the first nose, the wine opens up with a delightful mix of aromas. Leading the charge are bright citrus notes, reminiscent of green grapefruit, lime and lemon zest, complemented by hints of green fruits, like gooseberry, green pear and green apple, creating a refreshing and zesty aromatic profile. That said, a quite surprising element emerges in the background – a pronounced and irresistible scent of pear drops, which adds even more complexity to the aromatic plane. A touch of subtle herbal hints linger in the background, adding a touch of sophistication, but those can’t mask mask the presence of the pear drops that dominates the wine’s nose, reminiscent of those highly-aromatic, New Zealand pinot grigio wines.

finish: medium | aftertaste: zesty & crisp

The palate mirrors the nose, offering a refreshing mix of ripe and underripe fruit flavors. A crisp and zesty interplay of green fruits and citrus keeps the wine lively, while the wine’s bright acidity is the star of the show, forming a refreshingly crisp and zesty aftertaste. A noticeable touch of alcoholic warmth disrupts slightly that balance, creating a temporary impression of heat that detracts a bit from the overall harmony.

maturity: in its prime | drink now or within the next 2 years
verdict: fine | highly recommended | a quite appealing wine of good quality

All in all, this wine showcases very good varietal typicity of the pinot grigio grape variety, offering a textbook example of the grape’s main characteristics. The wine’s crisp acidity is undeniably the driving force here, creating a well-structured and expressive mouthfeel with a refreshingly crisp aftertaste. A touch of phenolic bitterness (which is a hallmark of high-end pinot grigio wines) lingers on the finish, delivering structure and complexity. While a touch of alcoholic warmth disrupts the overall balance, it doesn’t overshadow the wine’s overall positive attributes. Overall, this is a crisp, zesty and expressive pinot grigio wine that exemplifies the grape’s signature characters – highly recommended.

Pairing: Despite the pronounced pear drops notes in the wine, its crisp acidity and refreshing citrus and green fruit character makes it a good match for seafood dishes. Oysters on the half shell would be a particularly well-suited pairing, as the wine’s bright acidity will cut lovely through the briny minerality of the oysters, while the subtle sweetness of the pear drop flavors will enrich the delicate creaminess of the food. Another option would be mahi mahi fillets with a simple lemon or butter sauce, where the wine’s acidity will enhance the citrus flavors in the sauce, while the wine’s crispness will complement the richness of the fish. Those pairings would allows both, the wine and the dish to shine, creating a harmonious and refreshing tasting experience. Enjoy!
