WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We are still discovering Wine of Moldova for the time being and we’ve decided that it’s time to bring out a wine from our private collection, a wine that is still representing Moldova on international scene, a wine that is intended only for export – Merlot – Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 from DK-Intertrade, marketed under the trademark Firebird Legend.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a pure garnet color, it is pale and translucent, with the rim-color of a clear purple shade.
The nose is clean and rich, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose brings clear notes of sour cherry, blue plum, red currant, blueberry and beetroot. Then come the secondary, savory notes of grape seeds, dark chocolate, roasted sugar and a very insistent flavor of an old but noble barique.
The wine is medium-dry, with some hints of residual sugar, with moderate alcohol level, which makes the wine taste lush and opulent, but quite round. High acidity and medium tannin form a fair balance overall and, at the same time, a smooth body, with an accented, seedy-green taste. The final impression is that the wine is lacking a bit of character but, at the same time, it has a highlighted rustic and quite savory profile.
The wine has a long finish with a quite balanced, maybe just a little bit bitter, aftertaste, which fills your mouth with seedy notes and some leathery-barnyard sensations.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 85.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that one of the previous vintages of this wine has been already appreciated on international scene with a commended accolade at Decanter World Wine Awards and another commended accolade at International Wine Challenge – two of the most appreciated wine contests in the world of wine. We would also like to highlight that this is one of the first attempts of local winemakers to make a name for themselves on international scene and, judging by the above mentioned accolades (and some more for other wines), it was a quite successful attempt after all.
