WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Sticking to the Wine of Moldova trend and keeping in mind that summer is coming, we’ve decided that the time has come for a very special wine from our private collection – Sauvignon Blanc Late Harvest 2011 from F’autor. It is special simply because this is the only late harvest sauvignon blanc wine in Moldova – high quality, off-dry and noble. But there is one more reason that makes this wine is so special – this is the first and the last of it’s kind, the winemaker didn’t come up with any more recent vintages of this wine – we’ll leave it to you, to draw the conclusions.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a pure, crystal clear green color, with the rim color of a smooth yellowish shade.
The nose is strong with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is quite insistent, which brings notes of sweet fruits and citrus: white pear, yellow apple, apricot, ripe pineapple, quince, lemon and pamela. Then come the deep summer notes of candied pineapple and apricot compote.
The wine is sweet but harmonious, with just enough residual sugar, maybe a little less than a late harvest wine should have. With moderate alcohol level, moderate acidity and medium tannin, the wine tastes bitter-sweet and delicious, it feels silky, lean and smooth, like an elixir. The overall balance is good, which makes the wine taste more elegant, rich and sweet – definitely, this is the one that should be called ‘summerwine’.
The wine has a long finish and a velvety, bitter-sweet aftertaste – it’s so well balanced, that one may wonder if this is a wine after all, and not a fortified fresh juice.
This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that it’s a quite daring challenge to risk the fine sauvignon blanc grapes and harvest them late into the frozen season, where one wrong step could ruin it all. But here we are, enjoying this summerwine and reflecting on why don’t we have more of the same. You see, while there are plenty of refreshing dry wines on the market, one can also find a decent amount of late harvest sweet wines, that are marketed as icewines, but one don’t really have a real choice when searching for the golden core – the delicate, semi-sweet, off-dry late harvest wines. Let us enjoy this one, just because it deserves to be.
