WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We still continue to review Wine of Moldova and we’ve decided to change a bit the style – we’re switching to the dessert wine theme, but to be more accurate, to the late harvest wine theme. And while we were trying to figure out which wine should get the nod, a thought has crossed our minds – why not start with a legend alike – a veteran and a pioneer of late harvest wines of Moldova – Sonaletto Traminer Late Harvest 2006 from from Acorex Wine Holding.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a noble and clear amber-gold color, with the rim-color of a pure golden shine.
Olfactory
The nose is rich, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is sharp and insistent and it brings very clear notes of jammy fruits and honey: white cherry jam, honey, raisin, apple syrup, candied pineapple, mango, dried sweet melon, walnut, caramel and quince jam. It’s an explosion of jam and juice – like a sweet summer mix syrup or smoothie.
Gustatory
The wine is sweet, with lots of residual sugar. It has moderate alcohol, high acidity and soft tannin level, which makes the wine taste jammy, honeyed and delicious, with just a bit too much nuanced acidity. The overall balance is good – the wine tastes oily, rich and a bit rustic. Towards the end of the palate, some oxidation notes can be detected, but those were to be expected – time is relentlessly even to the sweetest of wines.
Aftertaste
The wine has a long-minus finish and a velvety-silky aftertaste – it feels a bit aggressive on acidity, but sweet and smooth overall.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 88.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, we would like to mention that this is an amazing late harvest dessert wine, it did stand the test of time, and it can be served as an aperitif, or as a dessert drink after the main meal. Also, it is to be mentioned that this wine is a perfect pairing partner for Thai cuisine or any other dish with sweet accent – smooth and oily, it will round up the palate and underline the spicy-sweet notes of the dish itself. As a side note – there will be no new vintages of this wine, nor any other wines signed by the above mentioned winemaker, so let us enjoy these legendary wines as long as we can and pay homage to the people who gave heart and soul in making all of this possible.
