WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue to review Wine of Moldova and we are still on the white wine theme, but this time it’s the noblest and the most famous of all whites, again – the chardonnay. In order to explore this wine style at it’s true potential, we’ve decided to raise the bar and try something epic and something new at the same time – a wine that is not even released on the market yet, Chardonnay 2012 from Berhord-Vin-Molda. This wine was made in an old fashioned style – this is an oaked chardonnay wine, aged in oak barrels, like a Grand Cru Côte de Beaune chardonnay.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a brilliant, pure green color, with a translucent, pearl rim-color.
Olfactory
The nose is strong with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is insistent and mesmerizing, it brings delightful notes of candied and fresh sweet summer fruits: green pear, green apple, lemon, quince, sweet melon, white cherry, yellow bell pepper and sugar candy. The second nose brings very clear tertiary notes of barique maturation: dried banana and butter.
Gustatory
The wine is dry, with no hints of residual sugar. It has high alcohol level, high acidity and dry tannin, which makes the wine taste a bit sharp, but smooth and elegant, with a well nuanced buttery profile. The overall balance is good, the wine tastes delicious and silky, it resembles a well made old-world chardonnay, with a nuanced, velvety but dense body.
Aftertaste
The wine has a lasting finish and a velvety, a bit sharp and quite oily, aftertaste, which evolves from sweet melon, in the beginning, to dried banana towards the end.
This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 92.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that we’ve been quite impressed by this wine – a classic example of a barrel fermented chardonnay – full-bodied, with nuanced buttery notes, persistent and complex, very close to a Grand Cru Côte de Beaune chardonnay – and, as it seems, we’re note alone in our appreciation – one of the previous vintages of this wine has been awarded a commended accolade by International Wine Challenge – one of the top 5 world’s most influential wine-tasting competition, which confirms the ‘yet’ undisclosed potential of this new vintage, that is still hidden behind the cork. We have to confess – we were mesmerized by this wine’s aroma profile – this is one of the best scented wines we’ve tasted so far, with a noble grace and a delightful flavor bouquet, that brings memories of summer, candied fruits and sugar candies. Delightful.
