WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We are still discovering Wine of Moldova for the time being and this time we’ve decided to review something special – a wine that is shadowed by its more famous peers, a classic Bordeaux blend, made of cabernet sauvignon and merlot grape varieties – Piatra 2005 from Acorex Wine Holding. It’s vinification style is very much the same to that of the left bank Bordeaux reds, with the sole difference that it was made in Moldova and not in France.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a clear ruby color, with the rim-color of a hazy copper shade – a hint which indicates that this is an old wine.
The nose is clean and rich, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose brings quite clear notes of red fruits and berries: sour cherry, red plum, red apple, mulberry, wildberry and a hint of black cherry. A bit later comes secondary notes of mulberry jam, smoked plum, wormwood, red pepper, a bit of bacon and a nuanced scent of a roasted oak-wood.
The wine is dry, with no signs of residual sugar. It has moderate, quite well integrated alcohol level, high acidity and dry tannin. This is an old-world, firm and bitter-seedy wine – a bit smoky and a bit rough – a good example of an old wine that didn’t lost its character over time. The wine has a good overall balance – it feels bold and persistent.
The wine has a long finish and velvety-rough aftertaste. It is bitter and seedy, but it leaves a quite pleasing feeling overall.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 87.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, this wine has been awarded a silver medal by Mundus Vini International Wine Award – one of the top 5 most appreciated wine-tasting competitions in the world of wine – a simple fact that says a lot about this wine’s quality. The 2005 vintage can still be found in wine shops, but the stocks are limited, that’s why, if you appreciate this style of wine, you may want to buy one yourself. After all, this is a product with the ‘Made in Moldova‘ label.
