WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

We continue to review Wine of Moldova and we are switching our attention to the white wine theme. Tonight, we’ve decided to turn our attention to an indigenous grape variety, the famous and refreshing feteasca regala. Even though this is an indigenous grape variety, it’s not the most popular white wine here in Moldova, but, the truth is, it is growing in popularity with each passing season, so at least the future seems bright. So, let the tasting do the talking – the wine that we’ve selected for tonight’s review is Feteasca Regala 2014 from Château Vartely.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Olfactory

The nose is strong with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is sharp and insistent, with nuanced notes of sweet fruits: yellow apple, yellow pear, quince, straw grass, pineapple, apricot, yellow mirabelle and some subtle notes of cherry blossom.

Gustatory

The wine is medium-dry, with some hints of residual sugar, moderate alcohol and high acidity, which makes the wine taste zesty, fresh and sharp, where acidity is the dominant element. Medium tannin makes it taste a bit fair and lean, but quite crisp and refreshing overall. The balance is good, this is a young and fresh wine, which leaves you with a refreshing sensation, similar to those early summer fruits, that are not yet ripe enough to be consumed.

Aftertaste

The wine has a long finish and a velvety-sharp aftertaste, crisp and fresh at the same time.

Last but not least, we would like to mention that this wine has been already awarded a silver medal by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and another silver medal by Mundus Vini International Wine Award – two of the most influential wine tasting contests in the world of wine. This is no small feat and it only highlights the quality of those wines, made of indigenous grape varieties, as well as their future potential, both, on the internal and external markets. As consumers, we can only admire those winemakers, who dare to produce high quality wines, made of indigenous grape varieties – wines that represent Moldova as a winemaking country on international scene, wines that are a source of national pride.
