We continue to review Wine of Moldova and we are still on the white wine theme for a while. This time though, we’ll go back to the sauvignon blanc, because we have something very special prepared for tonight’s tasting. In order to explore the sauvignon blanc wine a bit deeper, we’ve decided to try something rare, something quite special, something out of the box – an oaked sauvignon blanc. The wine that we are going to review tonight is a barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc 2012 from Et Cetera.

The wine has a clear, brilliant yellow color, with a translucent yellowish rim-color.

The nose is strong, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is sharp and insistent, and it brings notes of sweet summer fruits and aromas derived from fermentation and ageing: yellow pear, ripe quince, yellow apple, lemon, pineapple, straw grass, vanilla, butter, cashews and the alluring aroma of a fresh baked bread.

The wine is medium-dry, with just a hint of residual sugar. It has moderate alcohol level, moderate acidity and medium tannin, which makes it taste unctuous and silky. The wine’s overall balance is good, this is a thick and well structured wine, with nuanced zesty accents. The keyword here is ‘moderate’ – the wine has no outlined peaks, it is lean and smooth from the first sip to the last one.

The wine has a medium-plus finish and a balanced aftertaste – a bit bitter and a bit zesty towards the end.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 91.2 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, we would like to mention that this wine is not on the market for quite some time and the only way to get one, is to search in private collections, as we did. But we can assure you that it’s worth the effort – we’ve been quite impressed by this wine: a rare occasion to taste a barrel fermented sauvignon blanc, with nuanced buttery notes. This wine is made using an old fashioned winemaking technique: after the alcoholic fermentation, the wine is rested on lees, in small oak barrels, and the most interesting part here is that the barrels are made of 100% Moldovan oak wood. This is, after all, the first and the last barrel fermented sauvignon blanc wine of Moldova.
