WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We are back to Wine of Moldova and we’ve decided to get back to the wine blend theme. There are different types of wine blends, but the most famous by far are the classic Bordeaux blends, made mostly of cabernet sauvignon and merlot grape varieties. This is the perfect example of a ‘less is more’ ideology – two grape varieties blended almost to perfections – that’s what a Bordeaux blend is all about. The wine that we’ve selected for tonight’s tasting is Illustro Rezerva 2009 from F’autor.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a quite opaque ruby color, with the rim-color of rusty-copper shade, which speaks about it’s age.
The nose is rich and insistent, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose brings very clear notes of red fruits and fruit jam: dried cherry, mulberry jam, candied cherry, dried sweet melon, black cherry, sour cherry, plum jam and black raspberry. The second nose brings notes of a medium roasted oak-wood, red pepper and allspice – a clear hint that the wine was barrel maturated.
The wine is extra dry, with no hint of residual sugar. This is quite a bold, firm and a little arrogant wine. It has a strong alcohol level, moderate acidity and dry tannin, which form a fair overall balance. This wine has a very strong character, it is quite fruity and jammy, a bit seedy and a bit oaky – a big, rich and rough wine.
The wine has a medium-plus finish with a balanced aftertaste, that leaves notes of roasted wood and red pepper.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.8 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, we would like to mention that this is that kind of wine that will express itself in a better way if decanted for at least 30 minutes prior to serving. Also, we’ve noticed that this wine tastes better if served a bit warmer than recommended. There’s something else to add here – the 2012 vintage of this wine has been mentioned with a commended accolade by Decanter World Wine Awards, which underlines the overall quality of this wine. That said, let us enjoy this one and be proud of Wine of Moldova as a national added value, for the wines made here are really growing in quality and potential.
