WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We are tasting Wine of Moldova once again and we’ve decided to raise the bar and get back to the world’s most famous grape variety – the noble cabernet sauvignon – the emperor among red grape varieties. There are many good to very good cabernet sauvignon wines in Moldova and we’ve had quite a hard time choosing one for the review, in the end we’ve decided to fly high – Taraboste Pur Aristocratic Cabernet Sauvignon Rezerva 2011 from Château Vartely.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a clear and a bit hazy brick-ruby color, with the rim-color of a translucent copper shade.
The nose is rich and elegant, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose brings very clear and nuanced notes of ripe red fruits: dried cherry, sour cherry, overripe red cherry, red plum, dried plum, black mulberry, rose hips and red apple. An instant later comes secondary and tertiary notes of oakwood, red pepper, black tea, red olive, chocolate, cloves and leather.
The wine is extra dry, with no signs of residual sugar at all. It has high, well integrated alcohol level, moderate acidity and dry tannin, which makes it taste delicious, strong and oaky. This is an expressive, bold and muscular wine – elegant, new world style and spicy. The wine has a fair balance, it feels a bit sharp, but quite big and harmonious overall.
The wine has a long-plus finish and velvety-astringent aftertaste. It is tannic and spicy towards the end, and it feels quite bitter-seedy. This is that kind of wine, one would hope to find in every uncorked bottle – elegant and noble.
This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, we would like to mention that this wine is a perfect example of how good a cabernet sauvignon from Moldova can be, a fact underlined by the most respected wine critic in the world – Jancis Robinson, also it has been already introduced on the international scene with a commended accolade awarded by Decanter World Wine Awards – the leading wine tasting competition in the world. This wine has a very good ageing potential and a nuanced fruit-forward profile, which makes it fit into the new-world cabernet sauvignon category – the most in-demand wine style these days. We would strongly recommend to decant the wine at least 20 minutes before serving, needless to say that the temperature is of paramount importance too, as the wine becomes muscular, astringent and even pleasantly rough if served a bit warmer.
