WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue to review Wine of Moldova, and we are back to the wine blend theme for a reason, as tonight we are going to perform something we were preparing since the day one – a trip into the past, to the day one, when we’ve reviewed our first wine. The wine that we are going to review tonight is a legend alive. This is the most famous wine of Moldova, its history dates back a couple of centuries and its blending formula is unchanged ever since – Negru de Purcari Anniversary Edition Vintage 2009 from Purcari.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a pure garnet color, it is dense and quite opaque, with shades of crimson and copper near the rim of the glass.
The nose is strong and insistent, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose reveals clear notes of black fruits and berries mixed with some nuanced savory flavors: black plum, overripe sour cherry, black cherry, wildberry, blackberry, black raspberry, beetroot, brawn olive and wormwood. After a while come those noble-delicate notes of violets, tomato leaf, black soil, black pepper, truffle, tobacco, leather and some elegant notes of smoke and roasted oakwood.
The wine is extra dry with no hints of residual sugar. It has high, but well integrated alcohol level, moderate acidity and dry tannin. This is a firm, seedy and elegant wine, it has a bitter-savory profile, with some nuanced rustic notes. The wine has a fair overall balance – it feels bold, leathery and woody at the same time – this is definitely an old-world-style wine.
The wine has a medium-plus finish, long enough to make you fall in love with it’s balanced and a bit rough aftertaste.
This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 91.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that this wine has been awarded a silver medal by Decanter World Wine Awards – the most demanding wine-tasting competitions in the world of wine – a simple fact that says quite a lot about the quality of this wine. We would also like to highlight the ageing potential of this wine, as after two years that passed since our first wine review, it is still apt to get into the 90+ zone, right at the summit of the wine rating page. As an epilogue, we would like to leave you with this positive message: ‘Takk, Norge!‘, if you know what we mean.
