WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Keeping the Wine of Moldova theme and while still discovering the world’s most famous grape variety – the noble cabernet sauvignon – today we’ve chosen for the review a wine, that is little talked about – Cabernet Sauvignon de Purcari 2012 from Purcari. A good cabernet sauvignon wine is not a hard find anymore, even here in Moldova, as with every new vintage the overall quality of grapes and wines are raising, thus making it possible to better highlight the varietal profile. But enough theory, let’s get directly to the review.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a deep-garnet color, displaying signs of age, with a clear copper shade towards the rim.
The nose is rich, with some hints of wine faults. The first nose reveals a mix of red fruits and some nuanced savory notes: cranberry, red currant, tomato leaf, wormwood, beetroot, sweet potato, red pepper, baked bell pepper and some nuanced notes of cooked vegetables – carrot, tomato and cauliflower.
The wine is dry, with no signs of residual sugar. It has moderate alcohol level, medium acidity and dry tannin. This is a green, savory and delicate wine – a bit bitter, a bit sharp and quite earthy. The wine has a fair overall balance – it feels a bit reductive and a bit angular – this is a vegetal wine, quite closed on the palate and a bit astringent, displaying a clear old-world profile.
The wine has a medium finish and a balanced aftertaste. It feels bitter-green and astringent towards the end.
This is definitely a fair Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 87.8 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this wine is over its prime, we would not recommend to keep it any longer for bottle ageing, as it display clear signs of decline. The wine is too savory to round up on the palate and too green to improve on the nose. We would also like to mention that previous vintage of this wine has been awarded a bronze medal by International Wine & Spirit Competition – one of the leading wine-tasting competitions in the world of wine.
