WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Tonight we are going to review a wine, that some of our readers requested for quite some time, a wine so famous that we could not delay the tasting any longer – Icewine 2014 from Purcari. This is a dessert wine that is labelled as Icewine, even though its winemaking technique is quite different as compared with a true icewine. Confusing? Well, let us explain. A true ‘icewine’ or ‘Eiswein’ is a wine made of grapes that were left to freeze on the vines until mid winter, while the wine we are going to review tonight is an ‘iced wine’, as the grapes are harvested in late autumn and then frozen in special temperature controlled rooms. But enough theory – on with the tasting we say.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with notes of jam, honey and overripe sweet fruits: yellow pear, rose jam, yellow apple, apricot jam, mango, candied pineapple, white cherry jam, fresh honey, acacia flower, white mulberry, quince jam and some subtle hints of straw grass.

Gustatory

The wine is extra-sweet, with moderate alcohol level, high acidity and medium tannin. It tastes delicious, bitter-zesty and smooth. This is a crisp and silky wine, as it feels creamy, rich and concentrated, like a fruit syrup. The wine has a good overall balance with a nuanced honeyed mouth-feel.

Aftertaste

The wine has a medium finish and a balanced, bitter-crisp aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 92.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this is a wine in its prime – a summer elixir that will do great on its own, as an aperitif or paired with a lemon cheesecake, apple pie or some honeyed baklava. But, the most amazing thing about this wine is that fact that it has been awarded a silver medal by Decanter World Wine Awards, a bronze medal by International Wine & Spirit Competition, a gold medal by Challenge International du Vin and another gold medal by Mundus Vini International Wine Award – that’s impressive if you ask us. This wine is gorgeous – we were very sad in the end because the bottle only contained 375 ml of this summer delight. Long may it last!
