WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

The wine we are going to review tonight is a classic Bordeaux blend, made of cabernet sauvignon and merlot grape varieties. This is the most famous blend formula in the world, as those two varieties combined can mask each other’s flaws, thus resulting in more balanced, elegant and complex wines. Both grape varieties originated in the Bordeaux region and have become the two most popular red wine varieties in the world. What’s surprising is that both are born from cabernet franc as the father variety, perhaps this is why there are so many similarities between them. But enough theory, the wine we’ve selected for the review tonight is Illustro Rezerva 2013 from F’autor.

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with ripe black fruit mixed with some nuanced savory flavours: ripe sour cherry, black cherry, black currant, black mulberry jam, cherry tree wood, sweet potato, black soil, ash, roasted potato, black plum and some hints of pomegranate shell. An instant later comes secondary and tertiary notes of charred wood, black pepper, dark chocolate, cinnamon and noble hints of cigar tobacco.

The wine is extra-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and firm tannin. It tastes earthy, tannic and smoky, with a nuanced fruit-forward profile. This is definitely a new-world blend – expressive, elegant and complex, with nuanced acidity. The wine has a fair overall balance between barrique and fruit, with a nicely highlighted oaky accent.

Aftertaste

The wine has a medium-plus finish and a balanced, bitter-seedy aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: in our opinion this wine is still too young to drink now, as its acidity and tannin are a bit rough at the moment. We would strongly recommend to keep it at least two or three more years uncorked. What we do like about this wine, is that despite its fare share of fruit, it does have some very appealing and noble rustic hints of fire ashes and black soil dust. We would recommend to pair this wine with spicy, fire-roasted meat, like for example some T-bone steak or a grilled top sirloin steak, as the acidity and tannin in the wine will cut well through those gamey and rustic notes in the meat.
