PURCARI | Negru de Purcari | Vintage | 2011
cabernet sauvignon | saperavi | rara neagra
WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
The wine we are going to review tonight is a legendary one, as this is one of the best wines from Moldova, in fact it is the country’s most famous wine blend. The blend is made of cabernet sauvignon, saperavi and rara neagra grape varieties, where the last two are the key to this fabulous blend, while rara neagra is an indigenous variety that adds local terroir into the final blend, saperavi is all about flavours, as it enriches the wine aroma profile with notes of leather, lavender and figs, but more on that later. The wine we are going to review tonight is one of these, we will be talking about for many years from now – Negru de Purcari Vintage 2011 from Purcari.

Take a look at the tasting notes bellow and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Visual
Noble and deep ruby color, with shades of scarlet towards the rim.
Olfactory
The nose is strong, filled mostly with ripe black fruit: ripe black cherry, red currant, sour cherry, black currant, dried lum, dried cranberry and some hints of cloves. An instant later comes secondary and tertiary notes of red pepper, leather, sweet tobacco, cinnamon, nutmeg, black soil, roasted oakwood and some subtle hints of raw meat.
Gustatory
The wine is dry, with high, but well integrated alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. The wine tastes fruity and earthy at the same time – spicy, seedy, extracted and bold. It has a good overall balance between all the elements (sugar, alcohol, acidity and tannin) with a mouthwatering and elegant leathery accent.
Aftertaste
The wine has a medium-plus finish and a balanced-velvety aftertaste.

This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.8 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Conclusion: this is a wine just a bit over its peak form – not recommended for any more bottle ageing if you are not a hardcore ,vintage wines geek. We would recommend to pair this wine with prosciutto bruschetta with tomato and olive oil, or some black worcestershire fillet – this last one is simply an epic pairing. Enjoy.

It is the right moment to drink it, it should be in its prime or already on the decline, therefore you better uncork that bottle today rather than tomorrow 🙂
