BOSTAVAN | Dor | Traminer & Chardonnay | 2014
gewurztraminer | chardonnay
WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Today we are going to review a wine that is a blend made of gewurztraminer and chardonnay. We’ve picked this blend because we were curious to find out how an aromatic grape variety in gewürztraminer will do in coupe with the queen of them all – the mighty chardonnay. What we have here in the bottle is a mix between two very different grape varieties – one is aromatic and lean, while the other is bold and complex. But enough theory, let’s get back to the wine we’ve selected for the review today – Dor Traminer & Chardonnay 2014 from Bostavan.

Take a look at the tasting notes bellow and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Visual
Topaz yellow color with deep yellow hues towards the rim.
Olfactory
The nose is rich, filled mostly with sweet fruit: yellow apple, fresh oakwood, yellow bell pepper, daffodil, vanilla, acacia, straw grass, pomelo, quince, apricot and some nuanced hints of algae.
Gustatory
The wine is medium-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and rough tannin. It tastes sharp, angular and quite seedy, with a nuanced spicy-woody accent. This is an austere, a bit rough but quite aromatic wine with a fair overall balance.
Aftertaste
The wine has a medium finish and an astringent aftertaste.

This is definitely a good Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 88.4 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Conclusion: this is a wine that is over its prime form, therefore no more bottle ageing is recommended, as it is clearly on the decline slope. It has a nice aromatic profile and a nuanced woody mouthfeel. We would suggest to pairs this wine with high-fat fish dishes, like for example fried butterfish or river fish, like grilled trout or barbequed crayfish.
