WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Tonight we are going to continue with the ‘Queen of Whites’ – a single varietal chardonnay wine, quite rightly regarded as the best expression of this noble grape variety. And just because we do like to rise the bar from time to time, we’ve decided to pick for the review tonight an oaked chardonnay wine – Leat 6500 The Origin Chardonnay 2013 from M1. Crama Atelier. Oaked means barrel fermented, which in its turn means that malolactic fermentation is responsible for the creaminess in the wine, thus making the resulting wine less tart and more silky.

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet fruit and citrus: lemon, yellow apple, pomelo, honey melon, fresh oakwood, apricot, butter, hay, gooseberry, peach and some nuanced notes of vanilla.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and firm tannin. It tastes buttery, fruity and a bit rough, with a nuanced oaky accent. This is a crisp, sharp and quite muscular wine, with a clear new-world profile. It has a fair overall balance between fruit and barrique, and a quite silky and lean body.

Aftertaste

It has a long finish and a balanced, zesty and smooth aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Romania and the overall rating says the same, with 90.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Conclusion: this is a wine in its prime form – delicious and fresh, with some nuanced buttery-oaky flavours. You will not pick a better timing to uncork this wine, but if you insist, we will not recommend to keep it more than 12 months uncorked. For your ultimate wine & food experience, pair this wine with buttery, lemon dressed seafood dishes, like for example grilled oysters, lobster thermidor or greek octopus. Enjoy!
