WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Tonight we are going to review a wine that is less popular than its peers, as it is a malbec wine with the label ‘Made in Moldova’ – Sol Negru Malbec 2015 from Asconi. Known for its plump, dark fruit flavors and smoky finish, malbec offers a great alternative to higher priced cabernet sauvignon or merlot wines. However, there’s more to malbec than just value, as it offers an unmatched complexity and elegance, but more on that later, let’s now get directly to the tasting.

The nose is rich, filled mostly with black fruits: ripe sour cherry, black cherry jam, passion fruit, dried fig, black cherry, blackberry, black mulberry, black currant and some hints of overripe black plum. An instant later comes secondary and tertiary notes of black pepper, tobacco, black tea, medium roasted oakwood and some subtle hints of forest floor.

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. It tastes tannic, fruity and spicy, with a nuanced new-world accent. This is a bitter-seedy, bold and well structured wine, with some hints of oakwood. The wine has a fair overall balance and a very appealing complexity.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Conclusion: this wine is yet too young to drink now, but it is clearly on the ascending slope, so just a couple more years of bottle ageing will do just fine. Its ripe tannins and mouth-watering acidity makes it an ideal pairing partner for any spicy or barbequed meat dishes. We would recommend to try this wine alongside grilled veal meat or some spicy veal chops, the latter one will amaze you, as it is a perfect pairing indeed. Enjoy.
