WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Tonight we are going to review a rosé wine, but not the regular one, as tonight we are going to review a pinot gris rosé wine – Pinot Grigio Rosé from Corten. This is a non-vintage rosé wine, made in a so called “vin gris” method, which means ‘grey wine’ and is when grapes are used to make a nearly-white wine. This method of making rosé wines is popular in the Provence region of France and is used mostly for light red grape varieties such as pinot noir or the white grape varieties with pink skin color, such as pinot gris or gewurztraminer. But enough theory, let’s move on to the tasting.
Take a look at the tasting notes below and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Pastel pearl color with shades of pale orange towards the rim of the glass.
The nose is rich, filled mostly with sweet fruit flavours: nectarine, strawberry, apricot, raspberry, peach, apple, ripe pear and some subtle hints of caramel.
The wine is dry, with strong alcohol level, strong acidity and firm tannin. This is a sharp, tart and quite austere wine, as it feels rough, acrid and too high on alcohol. As a result, the wine has a weak overall balance, as it feels quite hot and angular.
The wine has a medium finish and a quite astringent aftertaste.
This is definitely a fair Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 87.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this is a wine that is over its prime, a wine which is definitely on the decline, therefore no more bottle ageing is recommended. What it does need is some food pairing in order to smoothen its edges, thus some oven roasted salmon fish with thyme and rosmarine is highly recommended. Just try it yourself and enjoy.
