KVINT | Grand Reserve | Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot | 2012
merlot | cabernet sauvignon

WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Tonight we are going to review another Bordeaux blend, made of cabernet sauvignon and merlot – Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot 2012 from Kvint. This is the most famous blend formula in the world, as those two varieties combined can complement each other almost to perfection, thus resulting in complex, elegant and well balanced wines. Both grape varieties originated in the Bordeaux region and have become the two most popular red wine varieties in the world.
Take a look at the tasting notes bellow and our detailed assessment of the wine:

Deep and noble garnet color, with shades of copper and ruby towards the rim of the glass.

The nose is rich, filled mostly with red fruits flavours: sour cherry, red plum, blackcurrant, black plum, black raspberry, black mulberry, red bell pepper and paprika. An instant later the nose is filled with notes of red pepper, black pepper, allspice and some nuanced hints of a medium roasted oakwood.

The wine is medium-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and firm tannin. It feels round, wide and opulent, with a quite seedy accent. This wine tastes lean, firm and tannic. It has a fair overall balance – a bit rough and austere towards the end.

It has a medium finish and a balanced, opulent and tart aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.1 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Conclusion: this wine is a bit over its prime form, clearly on the decline. It has a pleasant medium body with nice, firm tannin. We would not recommend to keep it uncorked any longer, as it does not display signs of ageing potential. Pair this wine with spicy or sauce based steak meat, like for example a T-bone steak or a grilled tomahawk steak, as the acidity and tannin in the wine will cut well through the meaty flavours of the dish. Enjoy!
