WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Today we present you one of the best value crémant wines made in Moldova – Spumant Clasic Brut 2013 from Château Vartely. It is made in a classic ‘méthode traditionelle’ or ‘méthode champenoise’ style, using only the pinot noir variety from the three main grape varieties allowed in the Champagne region (this style is also called ‘Blanc de Noirs‘), with second fermentation in the bottle, as a result, the wine was aged on lees for 12 months to add flavour, texture and complexity. But enough theory, let’s get straight to the tasting and find out just how good this wine is.

The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet fruits and citrus flavours: ripe yellow apple, quince, butter, ripe white pear, pomelo, white melon, baked apple, gooseberry, mango, lemon, white cherry, melissa, fresh mint and some very nuanced hints of fbrie cheese.

The wine is medium-dry, with moderate alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. It tastes creamy, crisp and lactic, with a nuanced citrusy accent. This is a quite yeasty, fresh and fruity wine, with nuanced acidity and quite appealing and fair overall balance.

It has a medium finish and a balanced, crisp and creamy aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.6 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Conclusion: this is a wine in its peak form – crisp, fruity and well structured, with a quite smooth and supple body. Drink it now, as this is the optimal time, or in the next 6 to 9 months, as there’s no reason for any more bottle ageing. To be honest, this is one of the best local crémant wines – extremely refreshing and appealing. We would recommend to enjoy this wine standalone, in order to explore its full flavour profile without any distractions. Alternatively, you can pair it with some citrus quinoa salad with avocado and pomegranates or a pear salad with quince croutons. Enjoy!
