CHÂTEAU VARTELY | Individo | Traminer – Sauvignon Blanc | 2016

WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Tonight we are going to review a wine that is neither new nor old, as it was released on the market last season, yet it is still relatively unnoticed by the wine lovers – Individo Traminer – Sauvignon Blanc 2016 from Château Vartely. It is a white wine blend, made of gewurztraminer, which is responsible for the flavour, most notably the rose petals, and sauvignon blanc, which adds body, structure and finesse to the final blend. This wine is also part of the Individo wine series, that is a set of 6 wines, each with its own personality and character, wines that seeks to satisfy the thirst for individuality. That said, let’s move on to the tasting and find out just how good this wine really is.

Take a look at the tasting notes bellow and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Visual
Brilliant yellow color with shades of bright green towards the rim of the glass.
Olfactory
The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet fruits and citrus flavours: lemon, kiwi, gooseberry, lime, pineapple, hay, fresh cut grass, green pear, green apple, jasmine, peppermint, pear candy, straw grass and some subtle notes of rose petals.
Gustatory
The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and firm tannin. It tastes citrusy, mineral and tart, a bit bitter and quite zesty. This is a crisp, light and a bit green wine, as it feels a bit sharp and a bit angular but lean and appealing at the same time, with a fair overall balance.
Aftertaste
It has a medium finish and a balanced, bitter-tart aftertaste.

This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Conclusion: this is definitely a wine that is about to reach its prime form in a couple of month – ready to drink now and not worth the effort of bottle ageing. As is always the case for most white wines, it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. In order to amplify its aromatics, we would recommend to pair this wine with slightly spiced or creamy dishes, like for example an oven roasted garlic and butter rainbow trout or some pasta ai quattro formaggi, as the creaminess in the dish will counter-balance those sharp edges of the wine. It’s all about the balance. Cheers!
