WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

The wine we are going to review today is quite special – Surori 2017 by Gitana Winery. This is a rosé blend made of saperavi and rara neagra grape varieties, which are two of the most seldom used varieties in a rosé wine. The wine is named after the two sisters, Liliana and Iuliana Dulgher, also pointing at the two varieties picked for the blend – one flamboyant and expressive and the other delicate and subtle. With grapes harvested by hand in the Valul lui Traian region, this wine is intended to capture the character of its area of origin. But enough theory, without further ado, let’s get straight to the tasting!

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with red fruits and fruit jam flavours: sweet cherry, strawberry jam, raspberry, honey, iris flower, red delicious apple, loganberry, watermelon, berberry candy, candied peach, sicilia orange, red grapefruit, strawberry candy and raspberry candy.

Gustatory

The wine is medium-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and firm tannin. It tastes firm, bold and a bit too sharp. The wine has a fair overall balance, as it feels fruity, jammy and honeyed, with a well structured body and an angular, bitter yet ripe mouthfeel. This is a complex rosé wine – delicious and appealing, with a touch of alcoholic warmth showing through.

Aftertaste

The wine has a medium-plus finish and a balanced, ripe and slightly sweet aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Conclusion: this is a very fine and expressive rosé wine that has yet to reach its prime form, therefore we would suggest 6 to 9 more months of bottle ageing. Due to those two unusual grape varieties used in the blend, this is not an ordinary rosé wine, not at all – this is one of the few full-bodied rosé wines we’ve ever tasted. We believe that this wine style is a perfect match for light desserts or creamy seafood dishes, like for example crème brûléeshrimp saganaki or lobster tails with honey & garlic butter sauce. Enjoy!
