WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Tonight we are going to review a very noble wine, that has just been released on the market this past summer – Aurore Feteasca Regala 2017 by Fáutor Winery. This is a single varietal feteasca regala wine, which is one of the best known and most sought after indigenous grape varieties of Romania and Moldova. Feteasca regala means ‘royal maiden’ and is a hybrid of feteasca alba and grasa de cotnari, that produces crisp, dry and very aromatic white wines. This wine is part of the Aurore wine series, which is made of wines that are able to reflect the terroir of the Valul lui Traian wine region. But enough with the theory side, without further ado, let’s get straight to the tasting!

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with citrus fruits and herbal flavours: fresh cut grass, wormwood, green pear, straw grass, green apple, kiwi, camomile, green apricot, lime candy, bergamot, green pear candy, green tea, jasmine and some nuanced notes of chalkstone and wetstone.

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and green tannin. This is a noble, mineral and quite elegant wine with a nuanced citrusy-herbal profile. It tastes green, a bit rough and angular, with a fair overall balance and a crispy-firm mouthfeel. The wine feels just a bit off balance yet amazingly appealing and aromatic.

It has a medium-plus finish and a balanced, green and mineral aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this is a very fine feteasca regala wine that is right on the summit of its prime form – crisp, expressive and elegant – drink it now or in the next 9-12 months. The wine has a green-tannic grip on the mouthfeel, which leads to a rough mid-palate, firming beautifully on the finish, where the nuanced citrusy-mineral flavors glide well alongside those subtle herbal notes. In order to complement the wine’s aromatics, we would suggest to pair it with seafood dishes that are rich in natural fat, like for example pan-seared mahi-mahi with lime marinade or lemon-grilled tuna steak. Enjoy!
