TIMBRUS | Polifonia | Note #2 | 2016
syrah | malbec | rara neagra
WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Tonight we are going to review a red wine blend from the protected geographical region of Stefan-Voda – Polifonia Note #2 2016 by Timbrus. The wine has been released on the market a couple of seasons ago, yet it is still relatively unnoticed by the wine lovers. This is a blend of syrah, malbec and rara neagra grape varieties and is part of the ‘Polifonia’ wine series, that is a series made of three wines, each one with its own character and individuality, which resembles musical polyphony by combining traditions with freedom of thought. The wine is signed by none other than spanish winemaker Manuel Ortiz. But enough with all this theory – without further ado, let’s get straight to the tasting!

Take a look at the tasting notes below and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Visual
Very deep crimson color with bright purple hues towards the rim of the glass.
Olfactory
The nose is rich, filled mostly savory flavours and black fruits: overripe sour cherry, blackcurrant, beetroot, black mulberry, ripe black plum, cherry tree wood, black olives, ripe blackberry, roasted wood, nutmeg, black pepper and some subtle hints of tobacco.
Gustatory
The wine is medium-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and fine tannin. It feels tart, savory and lush, with a nuanced acrid angularity on the mouthfeel. This is a quite supple, spicy and plump wine, as it tastes round and youthful – a wine that lacks a bit of character and structure. It has a fair overall balance, fine-grippy tannins and quite some overwhelming acidity.
Aftertaste
It has a medium-plus finish and a balanced, yet tart aftertaste.

This is definitely a good Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.3 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Conclusion: this is a quite young and angular wine blend that is a bit off its balance – definitely still on the rise, as it lacks character and structure. Even though we firmly believe that it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late, for this particular wine, we would recommend a couple more years of bottle ageing. Overall the wine feels angular yet spicy and supple, due to this, we would recommend to counter-balance all its sharp edges with spicy and slightly sweet, like for example a grilled steak and shrimp or a thai basil beef steak, so that the spiciness and sweet accents in the food will cover all this angularity in the wine, matching it to perfection. Cheers!
