WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Tonight we are going to review a very special crémant wine from Moldova – Pinot Meunier Extra-Sec by Cricova. This is a single-varietal rosé sparkling wine, made of only pinot meunier grapes and produced in accordance to the authentic, french ‘méthode traditionelle‘ style. The wine underwent a long-term bottle fermentation, a process that delivers very elegant and persistent pearling, as well as some much desired creaminess on the mouthfeel, but enough theory, let’s move on, straight to the tasting.

Take a look at the tasting notes below and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Visual
Pastel pink color with pale, white-grey hues towards the rim of the glass.
Olfactory
The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet fruits flavours: raspberry, wolfberry, cranberry, sicilia orange, pink mulberry, blueberry, pink mirabelle, red grapefruit, red delicious apple, jostaberry, red cherry and some subtle hints of strawberry.
Gustatory
The wine is medium-dry, with moderate alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. It tastes sweet, fruity and crisp, with a nuanced zesty-seedy accent. This is a quite appealing, supple and well structured crémant wine with a fair overall balance. It has a round and quite sweet mouthfeel and a syrupy, off-dry finale.
Aftertaste
It has a medium finish and a balanced, seedy-sweet and zesty aftertaste.

This is definitely a good Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.9 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Conclusion: this is a fine sparkling wine that is right on the peak of its prime form – fruity, zesty and appealing. Our insistent suggestion is to drink it now or in the next 12 months, as this wine is not meant for long term bottle ageing. In order to amplify its aromatics, we would recommend to pair this wine with creamy dishes that have nuanced umami accents, like for example a cordon bleu or chicken & bacon pasta, alternatively try it with homemade sushi or some strawberry panna cotta. Enjoy!
