Tonight we are going to review a wine that conquered our hearts from the first glimpse – Owner’s Choice Ana Sauvignon Blanc 2017 by Jidvei. This is a single-varietal sauvignon blanc wine from Transylvania, Romania, a region famous for its complex white wines. Owner’s Choice is the winemaker’s flagship line that contains four top of the line wines, all of them meant to express local terrior in a rustic yet elegant way. Sauvignon Blanc translates from french as ‘wild white’ and what makes it different from the other white varieties are its unique herbaceous flavors, like green bell pepper, gooseberry and fresh cut grass – these flavors come from aromatic compounds called pyrazines, but enough with all that theory, without further ado, let’s get straight to the tasting!

Visual
Pastel white color with delicate and fine yellowish hues towards the rim of the glass.
Olfactory
The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet fruits and some herbal flavours: apricot, white nectarine, hay, white pear, white apple, straw grass, quince, lemon, raisins, elderflower, lemon grass, acacia flower, melisa and some subtle hints of vanilla.
Gustatory
The wine is medium-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and smooth tannin. This is a smooth, supple and lean sauvignon blanc wine, with an opulent and oily body. It tastes crisp, elegant and creamy, with a fair overall balance and quite mineral and floral-salty mouthfeel. The wine feels a bit sweet and a bit woody, with a slightly salty accent towards the end of the palate.
Aftertaste
It has a medium finish and a balanced, crispy-supple aftertaste.

This is definitely a fine Wine of Romania and the overall rating says the same, with 90.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this is a light and lean sauvignon blanc wine that is right at the summit of its prime form, a wine that does not require any more bottle ageing. We have to admit, this is not a classic sauvignon blanc as it feels more fruity than herbal and tastes smooth rather than crispy. For the best experience, try and pair this wine with creamy dishes, like for example garlic & butter tuscan shrimp or pan seared scallops with bacon cream sauce, as those are some wine-and-food pairings that is impossible to forget.
