We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Tonight we are going to review a wine blend that blew us away from the first sip – Aurore Syrah – Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 by Fáutor Winery. The blend itself is intriguing, as it is made of two international grape varieties that contains high amounts of health-invigorating antioxidants – syrah,  which is responsible for color, body and structure, and cabernet sauvignon, which brings more muscles and adds the much desired fruitiness to the final blend. This wine is part of the Aurore wine series, which is made of wines that are meant to reflect all the particularities of the terroir of the Valul lui Traian region. But let’s not get carried away by all that theory and, without further ado – on to the tasting!

Deep and noble crimson color with elegant ruby shades towards the rim of the glass.

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with ripe black fruits spice flavours: overripe black mulberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, black raspberry, black plum, blackberry, overripe sour cherry and cherry tree wood. An instant later the nose is filled with elegant notes of roasted oakwood, black pepper, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, tobacco, dark chocolate and some nuanced hints of leather and vanilla.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. It feels bold, ripe and firm, with a velvety and supple body, crisp acidity and a grippy tannins. This is a fruit-forward, muscular and complex wine blend, as it tastes seedy, tannic and elegant. Overall, the wine has a good balance between primary fruit and secondary aromas and it creates the impression of a quite harmonious, appealing and well settled wine.

Aftertaste

The wine has a long finish and a velvety, ripe and seedy aftertaste.

96x96This is definitely an exceptional wine of Moldova and, with a total of 92.4 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Conclusion: this is a very fine and noble wine blend that is almost there, at the summit of its prime form – fruity, elegant and ripe – a very appealing wine that is easy to understand. It can resist a couple more months of bottle ageing (up to 12 months), yet we would not recommend it, as this is a fine example of a wine that should be enjoyed right here and right now, at the peak of its elegance and finesse. This wine does not lack neither character nor structure, still we highly recommend to drink it now, as there are wines that might improve with age, but there are also wines that are elegant in their youth and age will take its toll on them. Our suggestion is to pair this wine with dishes that are rich in natural-meaty flavours, like for example a pan-seared sirloin steak or a filet mignon steak seared in garlic-herb butter on the stove and finished in the oven. Enjoy!
