We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

The wine we have selected for the review tonight is neither new nor old, as it was released on the market last summer, yet it is a wine with a twist – Vintage Pinot Grigio Rosé 2018 by Radacini. This is a rosé wine that is made of pinot gris grapes, which are used to make a nearly-white wine, still, as pinot gris berries are greyish-pink in color, the resulting wine is pale pink in color. This technique of making rosé wines is known as “vin gris” method and is very popular in the Provence region of southern France. The vin gris method is used mostly for thin skinned red grape varieties such as pinot noir or the white grape varieties with pinkish skin color, such as pinot gris or gewurztraminer. But let’s get rid of all that theory and, without further ado let’s move on to the wine tasting!

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet berry fruit flavours: berberry, ripe cranberry, red apple, raspberry, wildberry, nectarine, red mirabelle, wolfberry, peach, strawberry and some subtle hints of mandarine.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and green tannin. This is a rough, bitter and citrusy-zesty rosé wine, with a quite angular profile and herbal mouthfeel. It has a poor overall balance and it feels austere, seedy and too green for a rosé wine – this is a wine that clearly lacks balance and harmony.

Aftertaste

The wine has a medium-plus finish and a quite rough, bitter-crisp aftertaste.

96x96This is definitely a good wine of Moldova and, with a total of 89.9 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Conclusion: this is a quite austere and angular rosé wine, presumably in its peak form – green, rough and well off its balance – a wine that is not really worth any more bottle ageing, as it makes any further assumptions so much difficult, therefore our suggestion is to drink it as soon as possible. In order to smoothen its sharp edges, we would strongly recommend to pair this wine with aromatic sweet dishes with slightly spicy hints, like for example strawberry fool dessert or spicy Thai chicken salad, so that the sweetness and aromatics in the food will counter-balance all the angularity in the wine. Cheers!
