Tonight we are going to review a quite interesting wine – Sauvignon Blanc 2017 by Minis Terrios. This is a single-varietal sauvignon blanc wine from Codru, a region famous for its complex white wines. Sauvignon Blanc is a very old french grape variety and it translates from french as ‘wild white’. What makes it different from the other white varieties are its unique herbaceous flavors, like green bell pepper, gooseberry and fresh cut grass, these flavors come from aromatic compounds called pyrazines. But let’s not put too much emphasis on the theory side and, without further ado, let’s move on, straight to the tasting to find out how good this wine really is!

The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet fruits and citrus flavours: gooseberry, yellow apple, hay, straw grass, yellow pear, currant leaf, lemon, pear, candied apricot, lemon, pineapple, pomelo, fresh cut grass, wormwood, melissa, marguerite daisies and some subtle hints of green melon.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and fine tannin. This is a quite opulent, crisp and a bit angular sauvignon blanc wine, with a wide, citrusy-herbal profile. It tastes smooth yet sharp at the same time, with a fair overall balance. The wine feels both, lean and austere, supple and flabby, it lacks structure and character on the palate and has a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel.

Aftertaste

It has a medium-plus finish and a flabby, green and wide aftertaste.

96x96This is definitely a good wine of Moldova and, with a total of 89.6 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Conclusion: this is a quite austere sauvignon blanc wine, that is already over its prime form – flabby, wide and angular – a wine that lacks balance, harmony and structure. It feels too rough and too opulent and at this moment in time it feels past it’s peak form, therefore we would not recommend any more bottle ageing. We have definitely missed the right point in time when this wine should have been tasted. In order to smoothen all that angularity in the wine, we would recommend to pair it with shellfish or smooth-textured seafood, like for example shellfish spaghetti with pesto toasted bread crumbs or a calamarata pasta with calamari and tomato sauce. Cheers!
