We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a single varietal pinot grigio wine from Moldova – Aurore Pinot Grigio 2018 by Fáutor Winery. Pinot Grigio is famous for its refreshing citrus flavours and zesty acidity and is enjoying a wave of popularity perhaps greater than it has ever known. Technically speaking, pinot grigio and pinot gris are the two names of the same variety, yet stylistically some winemakers and connoisseurs use the italian name to highlight the crisp style (usually totally dry with brilliant acidity) and the french name to underline the creamy (sometimes a bit off-dry with a smooth and unctuous body) of winemaking. This wine is part of the Aurore wine series, which is made of wines that are able to reflect the terroir of the Valul lui Traian wine region. That said, let’s find out how good this wine is and where it stands in our ratings. On to the tasting!

The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet fruits and citrus flavours: lemon, yellow pear, gooseberry, yellow apple, white apricot, fresh cut grass, kiwi, lime, green grapefruit, sencha tea, straw grass, wormwood, currant leaf and some hints of margaret daisy.

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and green tannins. It tastes zesty, crisp and seedy, with a citrusy-herbal profile on the palate. The wine has a quite green and fruity accent on the mouthfeel, with a fresh, zingy finale, as it feels a bit angular, yet quite lean and noble. The wine has a fair overall balance and it might feel a bit too youthful at the moment, lacking maybe just a bit of harmony and structure.

The wine has a medium finish and a quite pleasing, seedy-crisp aftertaste.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Moldova and, with a total of 90.9 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Conclusion: this is definitely a wine that is still too young to be enjoyed in its current state, a wine that requires at least 9 to 12 more months of bottle ageing before it reaches its peak form. Regardless of its age, this is indeed a fine pinot grigio wine with a profile that is reminiscent of the famous italian pinot grigio wines from the Alto Adige region, with zingy acidity and fruity-citrusy notes. To be honest, we were pleasantly surprised by its quality – a wine that has class written all over it, from the first sip to the last one. Our suggestion is to pair this wine with delicately flavoured dishes that are rich in natural acidity, like for example some langostino rice with garlic herb butter. Enjoy!
