We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a very interesting wine from the Murfatlar wine growing area in south-east Romania – Syrah 2017 by Domeniul Bogdan. This is a biodynamic, single-varietal syrah wine, aimed at obtaining healthy and tasty grapes by feeding the soil only with natural substances. Biodynamic viticulture applies the principles of the organic method – it does not use synthetic chemicals like herbicides, pesticides or fungicides, but a range of biodynamic preparations, that have the role of starters in harmonization of the biological processes in the soil, where they stimulate microbial life. But enough theory, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with red fruits and very nuanced savory flavours: capocollo, barnyard, iron, leather, horse saddle, red soil dust, sour cherry, redcurrant, red plum, cranberry and some subtle nuanced hints of red pepper.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. It feels savory, round and quite opulent, with a very nuanced rustic accent. Despite its savouriness, the wine tastes supple, grippy yet lean and smooth, with an elegant fruity finale. Overall, the wine has a fair balance between primary fruit aromas and savory flavours, as this is a very well made biodynamic syrah wine.

Aftertaste

The wine has a medium-plus finish and a quite pleasing, tart and slightly hot aftertaste.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Romania and, with a total of 90.4 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Conclusion: overall this is a fine syrah wine – savory-meaty and supple – a wine that is right there, at the peak of its form. It does not have the prerequisites for long time bottle ageing, thus we would strongly suggest to drink it today rather than tomorrow. As we’ve already mentioned before, there are wines that might gain with age some much desired elegance and finesse, but there are also wines that are elegant enough in their yearly stages and age will only take its toll on them. We would recommend to pair this wine with meaty dishes that are rich in natural flavours, like for example a classic beef tartare or a blue-rare filet mignon steak, so that all those savory-meaty notes in the wine would be perfectly complemented by the flavours of the meat. Noroc!
