Today we are going to review a single varietal rara neagra wine – Raritet Rara Neagra 2018 by Carlevana. Rara neagra, also known as babeasca neagra, is an indigenous grape variety that is famous for its ability to highlight terroir and it usually produces wines with light body, velvety tannins and high acidity, with nuanced red fruits notes and some subtle leather hints. Some experts even compare rara neagra to pinot noir in terms of structure and finesse, that said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results and find out how tasty this wine really is.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Moldova and, with a total of 90.2 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a very nice rara neagra wine – light in body, lean and crisp, with highlighted acidity and a warming alcoholic touch on the mouthfeel. This is a fine example of a wine that is still under development, therefore we would suggest at least 2 more years of bottle ageing, as in its current state it definitely lacks complexity and structure. Overall the wine has a quite nuanced fruity-savory palate, with underripe red fruits and insistent earthy-dusty hints. The wine feels round, maybe a bit wide and slightly bitter on the finale, therefore we would recommend to pair it with meaty dishes that are rich in natural umami flavours, like for example a roast beef tenderloin with red wine sauce or a medium-rare sirloin steak. Cheers!
