We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a wine that has established itself as one of the best reds in a relatively short time, a wine that should be followed very closely – Metafora 2018 by Gogu Winery. This wine is a blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and saperavi, where merlot forms the main body and the flavour foreground, cabernet sauvignon adds structure and complexity to the blend, while saperavi rounds up the palate and enhances the wine’s aromatic profile with those mesmerizing notes of liquorice and studded leather. Wine blending is part science and part art, as it takes years to master – the winemakers has to use a combination of technical skills, laboratory analysis and of wine tasting in order to achieve the desired results. This particular wine has been aged for 15 months in french oak barrels and is made of 40% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 30% saperavi. That said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a great wine of Moldova and, with a total of 92.0 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a wine blend that has exceeded expectations: round, supple and ripe, with mouth-watering acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth on the plate – a wine that needs a bit more time in the bottle (at least 3 or 4 more years), as it has yet to reach its peak form. The wine tastes rich, fruit-forward and very appealing, with plenty of ripe and overripe black fruits and some very nuanced spicy notes on the finale. The wine has a medium+ body, a ripe-tannic grip on the mouthfeel and some subtle yet noble oaky hints in the background. Overall this is a well structured and nicely balanced wine blend, one that is definitely among the best local wine blends. Cheers!
