We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a single-varietal cabernet sauvignon wine from the Valul lui Traian region – Onest Cabernet Sauvignon by Vinaria din Vale. Cabernet sauvignon is grown all over the world in a wide range of climates and by default it produces full-bodied red wines with dark fruit flavors and spice and it responds well to oak ageing. This particular wine is quite special as it is one of a very few local wines that is made without using exogenous added sulphites, hence the name ‘Onest‘, which in romanian means honest. That said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is nice example of a fair cabernet sauvignon wine that is made without the use of exogenous added sulphites – a wine that is still on the rise: round, supple and slightly opulent, with a nuanced fruity-vegetal accent – one that can be enjoyed today or in the next 12 to 18 months. The wine tastes seedy and green, with a quite nuanced bitterness on the plate, mostly due to its green tannins, overwhelming acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel. What this wine lacks today is some more character, a bit of finesse and definitely some structure. Overall this is a crisp, tart and green cabernet sauvignon wine, one that feels slightly off-balance, with a fine-tannic grip on the palate and a youthful character.
