Today we are going to review a very intriguing and, dare we say, unique wine – one that conquered our hearts from the first sip – Sauvignonasse 2018 by Crama Bauer. This is a single varietal sauvignon vert wine from the Dealurile Olteniei region in Romania. Sauvignon Vert is an old grape variety that is distinct from Sauvignon Blanc (with which it is often confused), also known as Sauvignonasse or Friulano and it translates from french as ‘wild green‘, which is de facto the essence of this variety – the green wilderness. This variety once dominated Chile’s plantings of ‘sauvignon’, considered to be sauvignon blanc and not vert at that time. Also, this grape variety is also very often confused with Muscadelle, however these are entirely different varieties. Being french in origin, during its history sauvignon vert was planed in the northeast Italy, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where it has found its glory as the main grape variety used in the white wines of Friuli (it is known locally as Tocai Friulano). But, enough with all that theory. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine sauvignon vert wine that is right there, at the peak of its form: refreshingly crisp, zingy and slightly seedy. It feels zesty, citrusy-herbal and green, with mouth-watering acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth on the palate. The wine has a medium- body and a green accent on the palate, with a pronounced crispy-green finale. The nose is dominated by citrus fruits and herbaceous flavours, with some subtle hints of minerality. Overall the wine feels nicely balanced and well structured, with a slightly angular mouthfeel – a wine that maybe lacks a bit of finesse on the palate. We would recommend to drink this wine today, as long as it’s still young and beautiful, in order to enjoy it at its finest, as this is a rare find – a wine that will pair amazingly well with any citrus-based salads. Did we mention that it is produced in a limited edition of only 5700 bottles? Get one and enjoy!
