Tonight we are going to review a legendary wine from Chile‘s famous Colchagua Valley – 5th Quinta Generacion 2012 by Viña Casa Silva. Casa Silva was founded in 1997 when Mario Pablo Silva, the oldest son of the fifth generation (hence the name of the wine – Quinta Generacion, which translates as ‘the 5th generation’), and his father, Mario Silva, shared the dream of making wines under their own label. They have dedicated much of their time to recover the old family vineyards and acquired an extensive understanding of the terroir in the Colchagua Valley. This particular wine is a blend of 4 grape varieties: 50% cabernet sauvignon, 30% carmenère, 10% petit verdot and 10% syrah, that were sourced from the Los Lingues and Lolol vineyards. The wine has been aged for 12 months in 100% new french oak barrels and another 12 months in the bottle, before being released on the market. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine and delicate wine blend indeed – fruity-savory, velvety and rustic – a wine that has already reached the peak of its form and is very close to the decline slope, therefore we would strongly suggest to drink it now or in the next 2 years. This is a firm, round and quite complex wine, as it tastes seedy-crisp and well structured, with mouth-watering acidity, fine-grained tannins and just a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel. On the nose it displays a savory-earthy foreground, supported by a spicy background and a layer of overripe red fruits in between. This wine is a fine example of how a terrior-driven wine can be crafted using tradition and technology, as this is definitely a wine that has both, distinctive personality and the footprint of the Valle de Colchagua terroir.
