We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Tonight we are going to review another single-varietal cabernet sauvignon wine, but this time, one from the Marchihue vineyard in the famous Colchagua Valley of Chile – La Joya Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 by Viña Bisquertt. The cabernet sauvignon grape variety is grown all over the world in a wide range of climates and regions and it can produce wines with grippy tannins and high natural acidity, wines that can mature and develop for many years in the bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon is also a late ripening grape variety, which means that it is best suited to warm climates, where it can result in wines that can reach into realms of perfection. This particular wine is made from the cabernet sauvignon grapes that were sources from the ungrafted vines of ‘Block 26’, planted on compact alluvial soil (mainly rocky and sandy clay) in the Marchihue vineyard and has been partially aged for 12 months in french oak foudres and partially in concrete egg-shaped vats. Viña Bisquertt is a family winery founded by Osvaldo Bisquertt and his wife Soledad Urrutia, with the philosophy to produce terroir-driven wines that can reflect the spirit of  Colchagua Valley. But enough with all that theory, that said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine and delicate cabernet sauvignon wine: savory-meaty and rustic – a wine that quite close to the peak of its prime form, therefore one that requires 1 or 2 more years of bottle ageing. This is a round and quite lean wine that tastes plump and voluptuous, with well integrated acidity, ripe tannins and a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel – a wine that lacks finesse and elegance on the palate. The wine has a pronounced savory-meaty profile, with nuanced brettanomyces notes in the foreground, supported by a subtle vegetal background and an irony layer in between the two. All in all this is a well structured, slightly hot and a bit angular wine – a wine that has both, a distinctive personality and the footprint of the Colchagua Valley terroir.
