Today we are going to review a very intriguing and quite unique wine: a single-varietal marselan wine from the Segarcea region in southern OlteniaPrincipesa Margareta 2017 by Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea. Marselan is a very rare red grape variety, with very small berries that can result in wines with intense deep purple hues. Marselan was obtained by crossing Cabernet Sauvignon with Grenache and was designed specifically for the Languedoc region, yet nowadays it is much more widely planted, although in tiny amounts, around the world, but mainly in France and Spain. What makes this wine special is the fact that this is the first romanian wine made of 100% marselan grapes, planted for the first time in the vineyards of Segarcea in 2005 and crafted on personal request of Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Margareta of Romania. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine marselan wine, yet one that is still developing, thus a wine that requires more time to settle down and round up, therefore we would strongly advocate for another 4 or 5 more years of bottle ageing. The wine feels round and voluptuous, with a full body and quite complex structure on the palate. It has a fine-grained tannic grip, overwhelming acidity and quite some touch of alcohol warmth on the mouthfeel, which makes the wine taste firm, seedy and slightly angular. On the nose it delivers a plethora of ripe red & black fruits in the foreground, supported by a nuanced earthy background and an irony-meaty layer in between the two. Overall this is an old-world-styled wine: well structured and slightly rough, with a nuanced fruity-earthy profile – a wine that has a unique personality and the footprint of the Segarcea terroir. More than that, the 2009 vintage of this wine was the first ever romanian wine to be awarded 90 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, which is quite a feat if you ask us. Noroc!
