We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a wine, whose previous edition impressed us so much, that we were eagerly waiting for the next one – Merlot 2017 by Chateau Cristi. This is a single-varietal merlot wine, which was vinified in a pure Bordeaux style, made with grapes sourced from the Valul lui Traian region, with at least 10 months of ageing in french oak barriques, where preservation of varietal aromatics was the main purpose behind the winemaking process. Merlot is usually regarded as the lesser variety as compared to its highly priced siblings, cabernet sauvignon or cabernet franc, but make no mistake, merlot wine is first class – it is more versatile, ripens earlier than both cabernet grapes, responds well to oak ageing and can be grown in cool climates and warm climates with the same success. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Moldova and, with a total of 92.4 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Verdict: this is one of the finest merlot wines of Moldova: round, lean and nicely structured – a wine that is still developing into the bottle, thus one that can withstand another 2 or 3 years of bottle ageing. It has a typical merlot nose, with ripe & dried red fruits in the foreground, supported by a very appealing, spicy & oaky background. The wine feels well balanced, with nicely preserved fruitiness, nuanced acidity, seedy-green tannins and a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel. All in all, this is a very crisp, supple and appealing merlot wine, with recognizable varietal characteristics of the fruit and some hints of future elegance. All it needs is just a bit more time in the bottle in order to open up and tell his story. Enjoy!
