Today we are going to review a wine that has been released quite recently on the market – Rosu Dealu Mare 2018 by Domeniile Prince Matei. This wine is a blend of three grape varieties: merlot, cabernet sauvignon and feteasca neagra, where merlot forms the main body, cabernet sauvignon adds structure and complexity while feteasca neagra enhances the flavour profile with black fruit flavours and some subtle terrior-enriched hints. Wine blending is part science and part art which takes years to master, as the winemakers has to use a combination of technical skills, laboratory analysis and wine tasting in order to achieve the desired results. This particular wine has been aged for 12 months in french oak barrels of second use, from the grapes that were harvested from the Crama Zoresti vineyard in the famous Dealu Mare region. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Romania and, with a total of 92.3 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a very extracted and flamboyant wine blend: expressive, rich and jammy, with a medium body, overwhelming acidity and quite some touch of alcoholic warmth on the plate. This is a wine that is still developing as it definitely needs more time in the bottle (2 to 3 years should suffice) in order to round up and settle down a bit, as it tastes too intense and too concentrated at the moment. The wine feels crisp and oaky, with a very nuanced fruit-forward profile, with lots of overripe and jammy fruits, supported by a noble oaky veil and some very insistent spicy hints in the background. All in all this is a real crowd-pleaser – a wine that in its current state lacks harmony and finesse on the mouthfeel, as the fruit-derived flavours are excessively dominating over the nose and palate. Our recommendation would be to pair this wine with meaty dishes with slightly spicy accents, like for example a butter-basted rib eye steak. Cheers!
