We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a single-varietal pinot noir wine from the Stefan Voda region of MoldovaSingle Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 by Pelican Negru. Pinot Noir has reached a legendary status over the last decades and today it is the most sought-after red wine in the world. The grape itself is quite vulnerable, suffering from a multitude of diseases and its genetics make it highly susceptible to mutation. But despite all the difficulty to grow pinot noir, when treated with utmost care, it is capable of producing the very best expressions of terrior. This is a true biodynamic pinot noir wine that has been aged for 12 months in french oak barriques and produced in a limited edition of only 3103 bottles. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a good wine of Moldova and, with a total of 90.5 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a quite nice pinot noir wine: thin and supple – a wine that has already stepped on the podium of its peak form, thus we would recommend to drink it now and not keep it for any further bottle ageing. It tastes seedy, crisp and slightly bitter, with a nuanced fruity foreground, supported by a vegetal-herbal background and a layer of woody-spiciness in between. The wine might feel a bit angular, with a firm-grained tannic grip on the palate, crisp acidity and an overwhelming alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel, all of which leads to a quite nuanced seedy finale. All in all, this is a pinot noir wine that feels rustic and green, with some promises of varietal typicity and subtle hints of local terroir. Our recommendation is to drink it now or in the next 12 months and pair it with dried meats and herbs.
